We generally don’t associate coffee with alcohol, except when making a cocktail out of it. But otherwise, it just seems weird, right? After all, coffee is supposed to set your mind straight and fill you up with energy for the day. Alcohol doesn’t seem to be an excellent addition to that equation.
Thankfully coffee martinis aren’t supposed to keep you awake during the day. Instead, they should be used as a starter for a night of drinking. And trust us when we say that they do this job insanely well.
What is a Coffee Martini?
There are a lot of recipes, of course, but if we want to look at the basics, then it’s pretty simple. The two ingredients are coffee and gin/vodka. In most cases, the ratio doesn’t even really matter; you can mix them as you like, which is why many people like coffee martinis. They can fit the taste of anyone and have a huge variety.
But these ingredients still should remain within certain boundaries. For example, the coffee should be fresh and still hot. It doesn’t matter if you used instant coffee or brewed yourself a cup from expensive Arabica beans, as long as it’s still coffee. But the freshness is what gives the drink that special taste, and it is why you shouldn’t use cold coffee (not even if it’s fresh and you chilled it). Although, most people prefer to use espresso shots as they can be diluted with the ice, and it won’t end up being as watery. And, of course, the vodka or gin should be of high quality as always. If you use something that was specifically made for teens to get wasted easily in a cheap way, then you won’t have a good time with your coffee martini. But you should also not get infused beverages. After all, you want the coffee to be the main thing.
The most exciting part about this drink is the fun facts that are about its history! They aren’t that memorable, nor helpful for current situations, but they can certainly explain some things about the way we drink a coffee martini
1. James Bond made martinis famous
It was originally considered a strong liquor drink, which is why many people preferred anything but martinis. That’s when the famous spy came along and introduced the world to the wonders of it.
2. Weak liquors and coffee were not common ingredients
People used to drink martinis one particular way, and that was it. They didn’t consider making martinis lighter, as nobody drank them anyway. But when James Bond appeared, people suddenly took an interest, and it turned out to be that martinis aren’t that bad after all. However, many people needed something to dilute the drink with. After all, it is mostly hard liquor, and those who weren’t used to it quickly backed out, which is why coffee suddenly became a common ingredient.
3. It is the invention of a regular bartender
Dick Bradsell, a British guru, was working the bar when a young model came up to him. Her request was simple: “wake me up and f*** me up.” A bit obscene, but Bradsell got the message and quickly got to work. What he came up with was a mix of vodka, fresh espresso, coffee liqueur, and sugar. It was a bittersweet and addicting drink, which is why it quickly became popular.
Coffee Martini Recipes
After all, this is what you are here for… To learn about the best coffee martini recipes that man (or woman, duh) could think of! Quick note: you can always switch out the freshly brewed coffee for some coffee liquor. It works just as well, but the result is likely to be of lower quality. Only a tiny bit, but that can still make the difference for some.
1. Coffee and Cream Martini
This one is a calories and carbs frenzy, but it’s so worth it! This drink is really sweet and can satisfy any coffee lover who loves their drink sugary. So if you are one of those people, then this recipe is an absolute must-try for you!
1 ounce of Kahlua
1 ounce of vodka
1 ounce of Irish cream liquor
How to make it:
Fill a mixing glass 3/4 full with the ice. Make sure that the ice you are using are bigger pieces, so you don’t end up with a watery mush by the end. Then add the Kahlua, vodka and the Irish cream liquor. Mix until condensation begins to show on the outer side of the glass. Ready to serve!
You can grab a little bit of sugar and some finely ground coffee to decorate your drink. Sprinkle them on a plate, mix well and dip the wet rim of the glass in it. This will result in an awesome look that you will love to serve to your friends. Another thing you can do to improve the looks of your
drink is to pour a little bit of chocolate syrup in the final drink. It will
sink and make a cobweb-like image on the bottom.
2. Espresso Martini
This is as simple as it gets. Easy to make (it takes a
little under 3 minutes even for a beginner mixer), has very few calories and
only 4 grams of carbs. Keto dieters, are you listening? This is your new favorite cocktail.
1.5 ounces of vodka
1 ounce of Kahlua
1/4 ounce of white creme de cacao
1 ounce of espresso
How to make it:
Pour everything into a mixer. Shake vigorously. And…
You are done, congrats on your easiest cocktail ever! (Seriously, though, this
is such a simple recipe for a drink like this, it’s astounding!)
Just in this one case, you can use espresso flavored vodka. It can elevate this drink to a whole new level, and you will question yourself why you haven’t tried it before. But be prepared to spend some time on the coffee part with this one. The core of the drink is the espresso, and it can ruin the whole drink if you don’t prepare it properly. Make sure to use something of high quality with a potent taste!
3. Coffee Buzz Martini
This is the perfect start to a night out. Goes down easily, has a fantastic taste, and will surely set your mood for hours ahead of you. Just make sure you don’t drink too many of these because they will knock you out pretty easily.
2 ounces of vodka
1.5 ounces of Irish cream liquor
1.5 ounces of Kahlua
1 ounce of simple syrup
1 ounce of half and half
1/2 cup of strong brewed coffee
How to make it:
Combine everything from the list above in a shaker. Once again, make sure you use ice pieces that are pretty big. Then go crazy with it. Once everything is chill and cold, you can pour it in a glass. Ready to serve!
There are a ton of things you can do with this drink, but let’s start with the rim. You can use grated white chocolate or finely ground coffee. But honestly, our favorite way to do it is by combining these two! It makes the perfect contrast. Just make sure you completely cover the rim and don’t leave any empty spots because that can ruin the look. But you can garnish it with whipped cream if you are into that. But it’s best if you only use a little bit, as the fattiness of it can quickly overtake the drink. You can also but white chocolate shavings on top or even whole coffee beans.
4. Gin Espresso Martini
Coffee martinis are usually best with vodka, but we
searched until we found a good recipe with gin. Just for those who prefer it
and would rather try a cocktail made with gin.
2 ounces of Italian espresso
1.5 ounces of gin
1/2 ounces of chocolate syrup
How to make it:
Combine the espresso, gin, and ice in a shaker and have
at it for a few seconds. The ice should break up a little bit, but it should
still stay in relatively big pieces. Once you’re done, strain the mixture into
a glass. Finish by pouring the chocolate syrup in it.
You can decorate the rim with ground coffee or dark chocolate. Just do not combine this because it will be over the top and can easily ruin the whole drink just because it stands out even before the cocktail could reach your tongue. As for garnish… 3 whole coffee beans are the best
choice. It looks great and stands out.
Everyone should try coffee martinis! They are amazing cocktails, and anyone can find one that they enjoy. Plus, they set the mood and the energy for a night out, which is why it’s gaining popularity recently. Why not try one?
