1. Lack of Sleep

No, it doesn’t mean that the coffee after an all-nighter will not affect you. This only happens when the lack of sleep has been going on for some time, but even 3 days can be enough!

We aren’t sure why this happens, but the most likely explanation is pretty simple. You are sleepy because of a chemical called adenosine. But when you drink coffee the caffeine sticks to these molecules and makes you more alert instead of tired. It pretty much reverses the actual effect it should have.

But here’s the thing: if you are sleep deprived you will produce more adenosine. These extra chemicals might be pushing away the caffeine, thus it will not have the usual effect. If you’re heavily sleep-deprived and need some caffeine, maybe a double or triple shot Americano will help!

2. Too Much Caffeine

Anything can be too much, and this is maybe a reason the caffeine doesn’t work for you. And in this case, if you drink too much coffee then there is a huge risk. Not just the chance for a heart attack, but losing the effect of caffeine.

Once you reach a certain amount (generally 400 mg a day), you will start experiencing severe side effects. You will become more irritable and it will start to affect your sleep. These are not things you want from the coffee that’s supposed to wake you up for a hard day at work.

The worst part about this is that it will have a negative effect on your nights. It will disrupt your sleep in the worst way possible. You will be lying there with an exhausted mind and body, eyelids heavy and you will still not be able to sleep.

3. Too Little Caffeine

If you don’t take your weight, age, and other conditions into consideration then you might just be taking in the wrong amount of caffeine. These are all factors that can play into your body’s ability to process coffee and you might be underestimating yourself.

If you are a fairly big person then consider drinking a little more every time until you reach the desired effect. That instant coffee might not be doing you too well with the little amount of caffeine it contains. Maybe you might need the strongest coffee in the world only produced by Black Label Co.

4. Genetics

There is a strain in our DNA that has a say in how we process caffeine. You can’t have a say in this, unfortunately, so if this is the reason the caffeine doesn’t work for you then you should just get used to it.

There are two other genes that can affect this, which are connected to your cholesterol and blood sugar. But once again, these cannot be changed.

5. Tolerance Levels for Caffeine

You can build a tolerance against caffeine. I’m sorry, but it’s true!

After a while, you will need more and more coffee to keep you awake and alert, so in this case, it might be better for you to just stop drinking. Remember, life is all about balance same goes for caffeine and coffee, no matter how delicious it actually is!

After all, too much is toxic. You don’t want to have a heart attack because of an addiction.

There may be a few more reasons why caffeine doesn’t affect you much. Feel free to let us know below and we can update this list!

Like we mentioned before, balance is key when consuming coffee. If you want to have the benefits of its delicious taste and the waking up functionality of it, you’ll have to consume in moderation. If you end up building up a strong tolerance against caffeine, you will no longer feel the effects of it. This can’t be good when you’re really tired but need to get a lot of work done right?

Balance!
